I don't quite see how his post was an anti microsoft post when he also mentions the Wii not contributing to the folding@home.
Anyways, I can't wait to fight me some cancer. And I thought I could only do that via blastfactor.

Yeah I wasn't really bashing 360, or Wii but merely trying to fend off and negate any potential PS3 hate before it got started. It's inevitable that any Sony related thread gets bashed by Wii and 360 owners, even if it's promoting a good thing like this thread is. My post was simply to stop that before it even got started, nothing more. I also believe this is one thing that other consoles should definitely try and incorporate as well.
Now let's continue with the threads real purpose

A lot of people leave their computers on all day and that typically uses more power. It's not for everyone of course and no expects you to keep the PS3 on 24/7.

The PS3 was only sucking down 200watts during game play. It's unlikely that folding will be noticeably higher than this.

Have there been any benchmarks released on how the PS3 compares with a PC or a GPU in terms of folding speed?

I've had mine running on it for about 4 hours total today and its abotu 70% done. it says about 2 hours and 45 minutes left until its done...i didnt know it could take so long to fold one protein....
it also says that you should devote your ps3 entirely to folding. i dont even know if you can run another application with it running also. i haven't fooled around with the new update so far, so i havent figured out how to multitask with the ps3 yet.

Hopefully that will change with later updates. I'm thinking about picking up a PS3 sometime in the next couple of weeks for Blu-Ray. Be nice to multitask while folding. I don't know that I really want to just leave the PS3 on for hours at a time just to fold. Although, if I do get a PS3 I'm going to get it at Target so I can get a 3 year warranty for $59 (unless someone knows of a better warranty value) then I guess I could fold until my heart was content and not worry about it for 3 years.

Anyone ever thought of writing your PS3 off as a research donation? If you are letting it run research projects when you're not playing games (probably 20+ hours a day, I hope), could you technically say it is a research device? Not sure how it works for the PS3 but on a PC if you have to re-install it will only show stats on that device since the latest install, but for overall stats on Stanford's website, as long as you use the same username and team #, then your stats should be all together. I have re-installed a few times on a couple of my PCs and all of the points and WUs are all under one name for me. Hope this helps.

I don't see how it could go up that much just from a PS3. I don't have one but everything I have seen says it uses about 200 watts so:
200w/hr x 24hrs/day = 4800w/day or 4.8kwh
4.8kwh/day x 30 days/billing cycle = 144kwh/month x 10 cents/kwh = $14.40/month

No, it won't work. There's no PS button on a Wiimote, the same reason why the Guitar Hero guitar for the PS2 won't work for a PS3, it was designed for specific hardware. Think of it this way, you take a remote control from your Sony TV and point it at a Samsung TV. Does it work? Nope. It uses the same communication protocol, but it's designed for specific hardware.

That happens to me sometimes but if you set the core priority to "lowest possible" it shouldn't affect anything you do on the PC, it should only use your idle processor. I used to play BF 2142 on an old Athlon Xp 2600+ system and left folding on, granted it didn't fold much at all while I was playing but then you don't need to pause it or shut it down while gaming.
Also, when that happens, sometimes it comes back up for me after the next restart and even if it's not in the sys tray it's still working......

You can't download new work units without the internet. Are you staying in hotels? Most hotels provide internet these days.

Its not any different. But he is going to be on a boat for 3 weeks. So fine, he can download a work unit right before he leaves but the expiration of the WU is within days. So he can probably finish that work unit but can't do anything more until he gets back to having internet access. He can't do any folding (besides maybe the 1 WU). So basically nothing for 3 weeks.

Linky (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/07/03/foldinghome-update/)
Come on guys, let's get FOLDING!!! (Me included)
The blog updated the progress.
The PS3 dominated team 2CH@PS3 is currently rankd 47th since the PS3 F@h client release, which is simply amazing. But they need to fold a little more, otherwise they will be taken over later this week by the rocket-like DL.TV team (these guys are serious).
Another PS3 power team is PS3Forums.com, already ranked 67th.
Also check out the rise of the Official-ish PS3Fanboy Folding Team (soon to break into the top 200) and IGN-PS3 - also, quickly approaching the top 200 milestone.
And of course, there is PlayStation 3 (SCEA), in two weeks they’ll be closing in on the 200 position rank and they just passed the SCEA PDIT team. I can imagine these guys scrambling in the aisles now to recruit more team members…

http://www.ps3scene.com/news/static/FoldinghomeforPS3toupdatetoVersion1.2-1187712652.php
From www.scei.co.jp:
Folding@home for PLAYSTATION3 Version 1.2
This document highlights some of the changes between versions 1.1 and 1.2 of Folding@home for PLAYSTATION3(PS3).
* Improvement: Support for Remote Play for PSP (PlayStation Portable)
Folding@home can now be remotely operated through the Remote Play feature of your PS3 system. When you use this feature, the Folding@home help screen will be specific to your PSP system's controls. Use this screen if you need help in navigating Folding@home from your PSP system.
Note: PSP system software should be version 3.50 or higher.
Note: To use Remote Play for the first time, you must first register (pair) a PSP system with a PS3™ system. For setup details, see the "Remote Play" section of the PLAYSTATION3 System Software User's Guide: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/network/index.html
* Improvement: Visibility of Donor Locations on the Globe
The markers indicating PS3 system donor locations on the globe have been improved to differentiate between daytime and nighttime areas.
* Improvement: Support for Additional Protein Simulations
Additional computation cores are now supported. This allows Folding@home for PS3 to support a wider range of protein-folding simulations.
* Improvement: Advanced Participation Mode
An advanced participation mode has been added to Folding@home for PS3. This mode allows Stanford to send simulations of varying computational lengths to users of Folding@home for PS3.
Because the simulations in this mode can take significantly longer, Advanced Mode is only recommended for contributors who run Folding@home for PS3 for at least eight (8) hours per day.
Note: In Advanced Mode, an energy graph during the simulation will also be displayed. In this graph, the blue line represents the total energy level of the protein over time. The red line represents the average temperature level at which the current simulation is run.
* Improvement: Screensaver Mode
A screensaver mode can now be activated via the Settings menu. After no controller input has been detected for three (3) minutes, the screen will go blank except for a logo that periodically moves to avoid screen burn-in. Any controller input will exit the screensaver mode.
This feature allows your PS3 system to consume slightly less power and to increase performance of protein-folding simulations.
* Improvement: Link to Project Description
A link has been added to the Information menu that allows you to quickly obtain additional information about the specific research project that you're currently contributing to.
* Improvement: Protein Visualization Enhancements
All visualization modes have been enhanced with improved shading, highlighting, and focus effects.
In addition, four new visualization modes have been added:
Tapioca - Displays the protein as a smooth surface with improved shading and depth. (Tapioca replaces the "ISO Surface" visualization that was available in earlier versions.)
Caviar - Displays the protein as a smooth surface with defined edges.
Licorice - Displays only the protein's bonds.
Backbone - Emphasizes specific sections of the protein that are of the most scientific interest to researchers.
Note: The Backbone visualization is not available for all proteins.

8/22/2007 New Version for the PS3 now available
With Sony's extensive help, we have released version 1.2 of the Folding@home client for the PS3. Updated features and functionalities that are part of this latest application update (v 1.2) include:
* Support for Remote Play for PSP: Now Folding@home can be remotely operated through PSP utilizing the Remote Play feature of the PS3 system. With this feature, PS3 users are able to view on their PSP the exact same Folding@home information that is viewable on their PS3, complete with the map of the world and the protein that their particular system is simulating.
* More Support for Additional Protein Simulations: Additional computation cores are now supported allowing Folding@home for PS3 to support a wider range of protein-folding simulations which further enhances the science needed to be performed to research diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
* Screensaver Mode: A screensaver mode can now be activated via the Settings menu in the Folding@home application, allowing PS3 users to consume slightly less power and to increase performance of protein-folding simulations.
* Link to Project Description: A link has been added to the Information menu in the Folding@home application allowing users to quickly obtain additional information about the specific research project they are currently contributing to.
* Protein Visualization Enhancements: All visualization modes have been enhanced with improved shading, highlighting and focus effects, including: Tapioca displays the protein as a smooth surface with improved shading and depth; Caviar displays the protein as a smooth surface with defined edges; Licorice displays only the protein's bonds and Backbone which emphasizes specific sections of the protein that are of the most scientific interest to researchers.
* Advanced Participation Mode: Advanced participation mode allows Stanford University to send simulations of varying computational lengths to PS3 users. Because the simulations in this mode can take significantly longer, Advanced Mode is only recommended for contributors who run Folding@home for at least eight hours per day.
Of particular excitement for us is the abilty to have accelerated GB/SA simulations. We can now run calcaultions which were first run on FAH in October of 2000 at about 200x to 500x speed increase -- a pretty amazing feat and something we're very excited about. We are reading new GB work units to go out and will report on their progress as time goes on.

More new features coming. From http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/12/18/new-foldinghome-features-coming/:
If you happen to be one of the people that wants to leave their machine running after they finished their late-night gaming session, but wish to shut it down after a limited period of time, we have a great tip for you:
* Go to Settings menu, select Automatic Shutdown and then After Current. You will see a little clock appearing on the top right hand corner of the screen. When this clock reaches zero, the machine will power off completely so you can sleep quietly through the night. In this option the machine will power off after sending the data back to Stanford University so your contribution to the project is maximized.
* You may also choose to shut down after a limited period of time (for example, 3 or 4 hours). To do that choose the Automatic Shutdown option and click on the “In 01h:00m” timer. You will now be able to change the timer settings. After rotating the timer to a new time, you should now see your selected timer appear at the top right corner of the screen. This timer will count all the way down to 0 and then power off the system.
* To disable active timer at any time, go to Settings, choose Automatic Shutdown and then Disable.
What’s a better Holiday addition to Folding than playing music? We’ve added a great feature in this version in the form of a background music player:
Folding@Home2
* To activate the music player select Music and then a channel. The channels are automatically populated with songs you have stored on your Hard Disk Drive! For holiday music I prefer to choose Dramatic (yeah!) and voila - music is playing.
* If you wish to skip to another track, just use a combination of X + left or right arrow. You can also change the channel by choosing X + up or down arrow. Happy listening!
* To stop music from playing, select Music again from the main menu and choose “disable.”
* Your music playback selection will be saved between consecutive runs of Folding@home.
We hope that these enhancements help improve your FAH experience. The response from PS3 owners really has been spectacular, and thanks to you, the most powerful distributed computer network in the world continues to grow.
Of particular usefulness is the "Shut down after" options. Now you can tell it to finish a work unit and then shut down automatically. This will probably encourage me to run it a little more often.

WOW ! Good thing you are an engineer ! Thanks for the tip ! I would have never guessed that running the PS3 would consume electricity ! :lmao: :lmao:
PS3 max. power consumption (for 60GB models...it's less for the new 40GB models ) : 190 Watts
Average kw/h price in the US: 9 Cents
Monthly price to run the PS3 24/7: $12.50

Just signed up my 40GB PS3. Rated at 135 watts it's for a good cause. Making the total cost around $9 a month if run 24/7, but I only plan to run it 4 hours a day. For less than $1.50 a month I can do my share.

Wow. I'm pretty sure almost everybody on here knows that running an electric device costs money.
Are you an environmental engineer??
I wish you could have it default to shutdown after current every time instead of having to manually choose it.
I have it setup so FAH starts after 15 minutes of inactivity, and since I tend to forget (or get too lazy to) shut down the system, that'd be a great feature.
