PlayStation 3 price cut may be ahead
Sony game console's hefty price tag has drawn criticism; Goldman Sachs analyst expects worldwide price reduction of $100 later this year.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Japanese electronics giant Sony may cut the price of its PlayStation 3 by $100 worldwide in October, according to an analyst with Goldman Sachs.
Yuji Fujimori wrote in a note Tuesday that lowering the cost of the game console, which competes with Microsoft's (Charts) XBox 360 and Nintendo's (Charts) Wii, will not undermine the unit's long-term profitability.
The PS3, criticized by consumers and industry watchers for its high price, can cost up to $700, although the basic model retails for $499.
"The PS3 price has long been cited as high," Fujimori wrote, noting that cutting the price of game consoles has historically quadrupled volumes.
Fujimori sees simplification of design aiding PS3's profitability as well, noting Sony's (Charts) original PS began with 700 components and concluded with 200, while the PS2 started with 2,000 parts and finished with 600. The PS3 prototype had 4,000 components but now a shift to around 2,000 is in the pipeline.
Earlier in March, press reports in Japan said Sony is planning to introduce cheaper microprocessor chips for its PS3 to help bring down the price.

God i hate it when people post stuff like this... Man its technology!!!!! If you wait long enough youll be able to buy a PS4 for 29 bucks on ebay!!! DUH!!! That doesnt make it a slick deal, or even a deal at all! SO DONT POST IT!!!

Good info, but this might be better served in the PS3/Wii Availability thread.
No doubt the PS3 will eventually cut its prices, it's only a question of when. Game systems can be sold at prices below manufacturing costs, the company usually makes their profits on the games... which the PS3 is seriously lacking.

Its not something you should EVER have to search the internet for! Its just common knowledge about technology in general! EVERYTHING will drop down in price eventually. You should have known this before the PS3 even came out! Just wait and its price will lower!

If Sony has a $100 pricedrop this year for the PS3, I personally guarantee it will take the #1 spot this generation. I'm still confident it will in a couple of years, but I don't guarantee it right now.
With that said, there's no way I see them having a pricedrop. They took out the Emotion Engine to try and recoup a little bit of money from each unit. You think they're going to increase their loss on each console in less than a year? Guess again.

If you need any further proof, just read the Jack Tretton article in Mar 07 edition of EGM (page 64). I liken this guy to Baghdad Bob....

Don't be a jerk. It's nice to know approximately when it will happen to be able to plan accordingly. Yes, all technology eventually becomes cheaper, but we all use what knowledge we have about WHEN that will happen to plan our purchases now and in the near future.

Pretty much anything related to the PS3 will get a thumbs down rating. It's the console people love to hate. I personally think this analysis is off the mark but I didn't give a thumbs down.

the problem is that this is just some analyst's opinion on what Sony might do. So it's still just speculation, therefore it's not a deal. Also, I think it's been pretty normal for console prices to be lowered about a year after release.

Only news is a new console costing 479 in black with HDMI and 120GB of storage. It's still in the rumor stage but nearly confirmed

yes its been nearly confirmed for like 3 months on in the ps3/wii threads.
and the pic's of black are used from a pre-production 360 1.5 years old now.

anyone find it amazing, that the ps3 will lose 50% of it components in a about a years. 4000 to 2000? thats amazon.

Anyone with common sense will see this coming a mile away. PS3 isn't doing too well overall and will be force to reduce their price either voluntary or involuntary before the holiday season anyway. $100 price is not enough though, I had a 'really' hard time shelling out for $400 360 , I don't see why would I feel different about $500 PS3. I guess... I'll have to wait for awhile for PS3 to come down to $400 maybe next holiday season (2008) then find some Slickdeal to push it down to closer to $300.... by that time their game library will be pretty mature.... so this is a good news, since sony (and the other two) will have a pretty good lessen learned from this generation....

Oh, I don't disagree that it's not a deal, I just don't agree that it's not useful, and I think ranting about how all technology eventually drops in price doesn't invalidate the usefulness of knowing WHEN it might happen.

Just saw that Costco has a PS3 60Gb bundle for $699 with 1 extra controller and 1 game. Even Costco discount is not that good yet.

This is great to all the haters if the new XBox 360 comes out for $479 with HDMI AND 120HDD and no HD DVD player then the PS3 will be a better deal. Good thing I didn't buy the PS3 or 360 yet ... I wonder how much the current 360's will cost when the new ones come out ...

Its funny...this isn't rocket science...anything console that cost $500.00 or more ALWAYS failed in the gaming industry...
NEO GEO, Turbographic-16 Portable, 3DO, Philips CD-I...to name a few.
Except the PC, I suppose. Your theory needs to be tweaked for inflation though.

Also to note is that those other consoles were all made by newcomers who didn't previously have any proven track record in console development. Sony has an established fanbase. Those other consoles failed because they couldn't build up a large enough fanbase, had minimal impact 1st party games, and virtually no support from major 3rd party developers.
As an aside, the NeoGeo did quite well in the arcades despite not penetrating the home market. I didn't buy a NeoGeo either, but I have bought pretty much every other console and portable - exceptions are: the Intellivision, Colecovision, NeoGeo, Lynx, NGage, 3DO (what the hell is that?), Phillips CD-I (ditto), GameCube, Xbox360 - yeah, that means I even bought the Nintendo VirtuaBoy. The Metal Slug series, though outdated by today's standards (and the 3D behind-the-back version for the PS2 sucked) was a serious quarter eater in arcades for the NeoGeo. The Samurai Showdown's were also very popular for their times. As an arcade platform, I wouldn't really call the NeoGeo a failure, but its arcade-console price did prevent it from getting into homes.

Yes, there are no frigg'n games out except for resistance. I'm waiting for the price drop becuase I don't really need it right now and could use the extra $100 to purchase a game & extra controller.
