http://kotaku.com/gaming/top/game-mag-says-black-xbox-360-is-coming-245472.php

1) they contacted the mag - they verified the rumor (says its true)

2) US retail price of $479

3) No hd-dvd built in

4) bonus over premium - 120gb and hdmi

5) you can get a premium for $300-350

6) looks ugly from the pick

7) for current owners, no info on what the hdd as an add-on will cost

I don't.

It's the same thing that Nintendo did for the DS and DS Lite.

It's the same thing that Nintendo did for the DS and DS Lite.

I also feel bad for DS chubby owners. This is a bit different from that though considering these consoles cost a couple hundred and the HDMI leap is bigger than the "it's brighter and smaller" leap that the DS had.

I am glad I waited, I wanted one since around Xmas when this whole rumor started.

It depends though. Your utility and satisfaction for paying to play Gears of War, PGR3, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, and other fantastic titles will be worth it for buying one rather than just waiting. To some people (or maybe most), time costs more than money.

I've had the 360 for a while now and if I could go back in time there's no way I would've changed my mind and waited. All the fun I've had in the meantime is more than worth the differences to me.

my sharp aquios 46" 1080p tv, displays the 360 IN full 1080p, so aside from the bigger hard drive why would I benefit? I do know for a fact some tv's are crippled with the HDCP not operating components at 1080p, but alas I did my research before hand.

from digg:

http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/20/xbox-360-elite-new-black-limited-edition-xbox-with-hdmi-and-120gb-drive/#comments

# The Elite will be limited quantities only; that may be as much or as little as a couple hundred thousand.
# The case, controller, and Live headset will all be black. It will have all new packaging.
# Elite will cost $479, and will be a 3rd SKU; it will be sold alongside Premium and Core packs.
# Eventually Elite hardware (in white plastics) will take the role of the Xbox Premium. That is to say, after the Elite is launched and sold out, future Xbox Premiums will have 120GB / HDMI.
# We do not yet know exactly when 120GB / HDMI will become the standard for Premium, but it is loosely estimated to be late summer or fall.
# Elite models run cooler than normal 360s, but they are not yet confirmed to have 65nm chips.
# Prices may remain the same with the 120GB / HDMI hardware upgrade in the Premium Xbox, but we may still see a price cut on the line when 65nm chips start shipping.
# The HD DVD drive will not be internal or bundled -- Microsoft never did or nor does not currently have plans to put an HD DVD drive in the 360.
# There are no current plans to integrate WiFi into the Elite or future Premiums (although that can always change)

At what pricepoint?? Increase the Premium by $80 or keep the $399 price tag and make elite adopters pay $80 premium for the console...either decision blows. I have been waiting to buy a 360 and was holding off pending all these rumors but now it seems the situation is even less clear. All this time people thought the core was going to be phased out but it seems the Premium console is the one getting the axe to be replaced by a new elite model.

{shrug} I'm happy with the one I have. I play games in 1080i, and I have yet to run out of disk space even with all the game demos and movies I've downloaded. And you can buy a new case (http://www.decalgirl.com/browse.cfm/2,212.htm) for your 360 for under 50 bucks.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the does the 360 only do 1080i res.? cause there is quite a difference.... haha

I'm pretty sure you're correct. I've never heard of the 360 having 1080p capabilities or even having a game that is shooting for that. He must be referring to 1080i. Perhaps his TV is 1080p and he believes that everything is converted to that. Hopefully, he just mistyped. Although it wouldn't surprise me if he fell into the old trap that many have of spending a ton of money on an HDTV to have the newest toy but not understanding what he's buying.

The 360 will scale to 1080p.
His Sharp Aquos, just like mine, will accept a 1080p signal over component.

Nope, the xbox 360 DOES support 1080p over component and VGA since November 2006.

It seems to me the "Elite" is paying an extra $80 for a black console, because once they sell out the premium will have 120 GB / HDMI at a maximum of $400 price point. No way in hell Microsoft is going to raise the price of the premium.

you haven't run out of space? I've owned mine for less than 4 months and have a little less than 2 gigs left with minimal downloading...

--------------------------

I also don't get the point of a "new" console...solely for hdmi. I understand selling a new hard drive...

The only reason I can think of is that M$ wants new 360 adopters to have enough space for iptv, and hope old adopters will buy the hdd, or be dumb enough to buy the new console also

Thanks for the link on 1080p. So, it's upscaling the signal right? Or, if Microsoft or whoever makes a game in 1080p, the box can play it?

Is it true that 1080i is worst than 720p? My friends keep telling me about how 1080i has only half the vertical lines of 1080p and so 720p is better? I didn't really understand what they were saying.

It depends on the type of video being showed. For games, 720p is better. Read this:

1080i has just as many total lines as 1080p (and more than 720p), they're just interlaced. Basically, this means that it displays half of the lines, and then quickly displays the other half (at small enough an interval that we can't see it). 1080p shows all 1080 lines at once. 720p shows 720 lines at once.

I believe the difference is that interlaced displays every other line first (ie. line 1,3,5,7, etc) then returns and displays 2,4,6,8, etc. Whereas Progressive displays line by line (ie. 1,2,3,4,5,etc) thus providing a smoother display. Now, someone please link us an article on this as I'm too lazy to support my statement.

Never mind, here's the link:http://techdigs.net/content/view/53/42/

Big whoop. Its black, wow, get an xbox. No HD? What are the xbox 360 people thinking. I hate PS, and i think they made a lot of horrible choices with the PS3, with production and timing. Microsoft would have been pushed a little harder to make a bigger better product if the PS3 would have been something to compete with. Oh well. Ill guess Ill wait until 2010 when the new xbox comes out.

2012 is the likely year for the next Xbox (according to Peter Moore), but given Microsoft's penchant for abandonment, which, as an original Xbox owner, I am still miffed about, I suppose it could come at any time. The irony is that it will probably end up using a Blu-ray drive. Even though it will likely be 5 years from now for that last laugh, that would still be funny as hell.

I don't care about blu ray or hd movies. It annoys me that I wouldn't be able to watch certain movies if I bought one or the other. I'll watch normal dvds until a clear winner has been determined. The trouble with that is I really doubt a clear winner will be determined, it's entirely possible both these formats will be competing until the next format comes out, which hopefully people agree on with so there is only 1

Basic PS3 for $499 comes with a Blue-Ray DVD player but a smaller hard drive than the 360 Elite.. I'm sold just on the Blue-Ray DVD player.. However, PS3 allows you to upgrade your hard drive your self if you want, so I don't see the point of paying extra for M$ to put one in for me.. People have successfuly plugged in a 500GB to the PS3..

I would say go with PS3.. for $20 more you have something you can upgrade your self and a free Blue-Ray DVD player.. It may not matter to you, or you may prefer HD-DVD or what-not, but c'mon.. $20 Blue-Ray DVD player? Who can resist.

Edit: $20 MORE not just $20.. althout that would have been a slick deal :)

First, I own a 360. If you are going to pay more than $500 anyway, I'd probably go with the PS3. Personally, I'm quite happy with my $350 360 premium...plays the games I want and I don't need the HDMI nor the wireless. I've played over wireless and the lag is just too bad to play Halo or Gears. The wii is quite inovative, but many of the games don't interest me. It comes down to what you're looking for in a console. If you have any plans to watch HD movies on the console, the wii is out of the question. If all you want is a game machine, it may be fine for you. I like the graphics of the 360/PS3 and am willing to pay more for that only, the rest of the upgrades are just gravy.

So to summarize, if price is no deterrent, the PS3 is the way to go. If graphics don't matter, the wii is fine. If you want a middle ground machine, the regular 360 will do. If you just want the so called newest thing with 60 GB more space, then 360 black. Just an opinion.

So Microsoft wants to make this a media box but strip it of WiFi and a HD DVD player. tisk tisk Microsoft when will you learn? A $250 Wii has WiFi! Oh but bravo on a larger hard drive which is not user upgradeable and the case mod, what did that cost, and extra $50 to make? Get real
