UPDATE: Condé Nast Statement On Jane's Demise

Just in from Condé Nast corporate:

Jane magazine will cease publication with its August issue, it was announced today by Charles H. Townsend, President & CEO of Condé Nast Publications. The website, janemag.com, will also be shut down.

"This was a very difficult decision for us," Mr. Townsend said. "We worked diligently to make Jane a success. However, we have come to believe that the magazine and website will not fulfill our long-term business expectations."

That the Jane site will also be shuttered is a shift in strategy from other recent high profile magazine closings. Hachette's ElleGirl.com and Time Inc.'s TeenPeople.com were spared in their respective print killings.

Typically, when you enter a magazine contest they have a thing where you can subscribe to that specific magazine.

Yeah, when Premiere went belly up, they sent us US WEEKLY. GAG! Most of us got refunds!

My Jane sub just expired. Shame, I really liked the magazine and grew up with SASSY magazine. Ever since Jane herself left as editor-in-chief, things kinda went downhill.

It is an index to Media Week's hottest stories. A scan of that page today shows Men's Journal is revamping a bit, perhaps a sign of trouble. Reader's Digest has slashed it's ad rates, sometimes a sign that a free sub offer might be on the way. Quadrangle group has bought Dennis Publications who put out Maxim and Stuff. That might help keep the magazines in good shape and keep our free subs coming through 2019! LOL. Seriously, check that page once a week.

Normally when mags go kaput, the publisher will simply substitute another title they print. If you paid for your sub yourself you might be able to request a refund, but I've never had luck the couple of times I tried that, though neither was Conde Nast, so maybe they're better. On the other hand, if it was a freebie here, the sponsor would actually be entitled to the refund, so you don't have much negotiating room. Example - I had House Beautiful 'til 2011 and Hearst let me swap it for a measly six months of Redbook.

JANE was not a magazine for everyone. It had a certain readership. I always thought it was the "smartest" woman's magazine. Marie Claire is another good one. I mean, I read Cosmo, but I always felt like it was a sort of bubblegum magazine, lol! When Jane herself left, it was only a matter of time before the magazine would fold.

I actually read the very first issue of Jane - I had a free 2 year sub in the beginning.. Let that expire a few yrs ago, and I guess I am there for the very end too.... Of all the people in my high school class it's funny that *I* was the one to end up in a magazine like Jane. :) Wonderful trip. Saw five countries in about 12 days. Yes, it was a whirlwind trip, but so many terriffic memories.

Why is it when a good magazine goes belly up, it's replaced with trash? Us Weekly for Premiere? Glamour for Jane? Jane was so anti-Glamour! LOL! Of course, there's plenty of Jane haters out there. That's good to know. I only got one issue of of a year of Jane. If I can trade the rest of the sub for even one issue of Wired, I did good. I haven't gotten the card in the mail, but a sub for wired is $2 cheaper than Glamor or Allure.

I"m glad I got Lucky, until I realized I already have it through 2010. I don't really like Glamour (too Cosmo-ish) and already have a year or so on my Allure, so, before I call to switch, I'm curious if anyone has an opinion about Cookie? I've got a kiddo on the way, and think it looks hipper than other parenting mags out there, but I've never actually read an issue.

I called them today to see if I can get the Bon Appetit magazine instead of Glamour. The lady said that the only magazines to choose from is Glamour, Allure, or Lucky. Dang, I really wanted Bon Appetit. Oh well, free is free.

I wanted Vanity Fair instead of Glamour. I called them and asked them to give me Vanity Fair and was told they would put my request in for that magazine. I checked online today and I have Vanity Fair. They should be able to give you an option to choose any of the magazines by that publisher.

I got the card that said I was getting lucky. When I called and asked for wired I was told "your request will be submitted."

I just checked and I have an extra year on my wired sub. :)

If you want your subscription to start immediately instead of Feb 2008 just call them and ask them to start it with the current issue or the next available issue. They're postponing the start date in case people want to switch to another magazine (I had 2 different accounts so I switched to W and Vanity Fair) or just get a refund.

If you call them or email them- they will move up your subscription to the current month. That is what I did for glamour. Like someone else said, they are just giving you time to change if you want to. :heart: :) :heart:

I'm so glad I came back to this thread. I got like 2 issues of Jane for June and July, but started receiving Glamour those months as well. Was confused, didn't like Glamour as much as I like other mags so I called the (800) 219-5924 number. The rep switched me to Lucky and it'll start with the October issue. Yay for free magazines!
