Good luck -- 7 PM is too late!! If you lined at 7 PM even two years ago around where I lived -- you would of been screwed out of getting the laptop at CC. We got there at 5:30 PM and about 5 minutes later people started showing up. Keep in mind this was 2005...

Don't know if you are going after the super doorbusters -- but I can tell you the BB in Orange had people lined up as early as 9 AM on Thanksgiving day!! --

Of course I will give you a :secret: via PM -- however, that is only from last year -- this year will probably be worse!!

Alot of stores are starting to be open on that day. I know K-Mart has been for several years now. DH and I aren't really into football so we have made it a tradition to head over there after eating Thanksgiving dinner.

It is sad because they won't have a choice on whether they want to work or not most likely. I have worked as an RN for more years than I want to admit to and I've missed sooooo many holidays, weekends, parties, etc. I understand that hospitals do not close and there are always people there who NEED us.

Its true that those who don't celebrate a certain holiday (Jewish for instance on Christmas) will usually volunteer to work the big holidays because they are paid overtime for them but we never had enough people who didn't celebrate the big holidays to accomodate everyone.

Now if we were NOT paid overtime (4th of July for example) would not volunteer to work and everyone would make a big tadoo over who worked what last year and what specific hours, etc. Even if they did not have any family functions, weren't going to any fireworks display and weren't doing anything for the holiday they would NOT step up and take the spot of someone who was missing out on those things. Their reason was.......... my spouse is off, so I rather stay home that day.

There were those who celebrated Christmas on Christmas Eve but no one volunteered to take their day even if they weren't celebrating because there was no overtime that day, but Christmas...... ok.

Whenever someone announced they were pregnant, the first thing we all thought of is................. what holidays is she getting off? And if anyone needed an elective surgery they were sure to hear complaints if their disability time off covered the Christmas holidays.

My daughter worked at Boston Market. She had to quit one year because her parents (me and my hubby) picked Christmas week to go skiing. They made no exception for her even tho she had been there two years and never once called in sick.

Young people will still go out with friends on Christmas cuz they know no one else is working...... cept those at hospitals and the few retail spots open.

I worked @ Wal-Mart last Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day.........and on and on...

Not only is there usually extra work for the employees in preparing for a holiday (not to mention the work AFTER a holiday!!) but most customers are even more hurried, more apt to be rude/obnoxious and less likely to smile, much less speak to an employee politely.
Be nice to all of those people who have no choice but to work on the holidays - chances are, they would much rather be doing last-minute shopping than spending the day at work!!

15-20 employees is not that many, but what we usually do at the hospital is to split shifts into small time frames (4 hours or 6 hours out of a 12 hr shift). At least we get part of the holiday with family. It's sooooooooo much easier to work a few hours than an entire day.
