Sold out online and none available in NYC for pickup. I bought the FZ290 from Sony direct and it is exactly the same as this one but this one (FZ210) has a hard drive capacity twice as large (160GB as opposed to 80GB) and this one is $100 less (on sale). Great computer - pick one up if you can! I was going to return mine and get this to save $100 and get the twice as large HD but its sold out anywhere I could have a chance to get it. Awesome notebook for the price. Get one if you can!

Yes it is a good deal. You will find that the build quality is going to be much better than any other laptop in this price range. I'm no ta Sony fan, but their laptops seem to have a slightly better build quality than the competitors at this price.

The key features that stand out here are the Bluetooth, Wireless N, expandable to 4GB, and the 2MB cache on the processor. Most comparably priced laptops won't have any of these features.

No, the OS isn't really efficient and probably slower than XP but most of my software now runs on it quite well (lots of video/audio/web apps.) Oh and, btw, this intel integrated card x3100 is surprisingly much faster than the GeForce Go 6150 that my HP w/ AMD has (it's still no 8400GS or the NVS 120M in D820 though):

haha so true. My gf wouldn't glance at the other brands. The pink CR series caught her eyes and she was set. So I got her at least the same brand, for half the price.:D Hope it works ok! Most of the people I know with Vista seem to be happy with it. I've only used it sparingly, but it seems decent to me. I'm under the impression that it just takes some getting used to....like all operating systems that you've never used before.

apple is not greater than sony. They are just as good. The battery on this laptop is really good. I get atleast 3hours on light usage like internet, word, etc with screen at %50 brightness. This is really good for a 15.4'' lcd screen laptop. The built quality on this laptop is excellent. I would never touch a dell laptop again because they break too easily. The screen would go out right after the warranty expires.

Ya im pretty sure you can upgrade it. But you will have to open up the laptop to change it. Its not as easy to switch out as ram.

I was able to order this laptop and live in the NYC area. I did however cancel the order after .. I wasnt really looking for a new laptop as my gateway e-100m sub-notebook serves me well and give me 6 hours of battery life, this would only give me at most 3 hours.. when i saw the FZ in the store i was impressed with how thin it is and how high end it looks for $599 .. but still had a change of heart.. goo deal for those who're looking for it..

FYI, Crucial also lists PC2-6400 DDR2-800 for this unit and their tech support told me that it can utilize the faster memory. Corsair does not list the faster memory for laptops and does not think this one can utilize the faster memory anyway. Sony says stick to the 5300 and told me that they have been asked this question many times before.

I'll do a little more research tomorrow, if anyone knows for sure please post your comments.

The box is a sony box. There is a huge sticker on the side of box with the upc barcode located on the top right had corner. It's sort of like how dell ships their laptops.

The laptop itself is amazing. It feels very sturdy, and is sleek looking. I am definitely happy with my purchase, but I do recommend upgrading to at least 2 gigs of ram, as 1 gig isnt enough. I knew that before purchasing and I ordered 2 gigs from newegg.

Got mine yesterday and played around on it last night. Unistalled some of the pre-bundled software, and just played around on it for a while. I would agree that it would be better with more ram. I currently have 2x2gb installed on my desktop computer, and am running vista 32bit. I have a 256mb 7600gt in the comp too. Vista sees 3582MB of my ram. Of couse vista or xp 64bit can see up to 128gb of ram but vista 64bit has more glitches than 32bit. Hope that helps.

In addition to all the crapware mentioned above, I removed MS Works and replaced it with Office Enterprise 2007 I got from work for $19.99 ;) Also, don't forget about Adobe Pro 8 trial. That over 1GB install will take an hour alone to get rid of.

I like this computer, It may not need 2GB of RAM right away but 1.5GB made a huge difference. The main gripe I have is about those two USB ports on the right side - If you use an external mouse (I found my Dell bluetooth mouse working quite well with no adapters), the stupid cables get in the way. It's the worst spot they could have picked.

Even my Chinese-made HP Pavilion has a better layout than this American-assembled VAIO (did anyone notice that?)

1.8 w/ double the cache would also get a much higher score than 4.6 in the Windows Experience Index. My Turion 1.6 x2 get the same score.

Those of you that get a 1.8Ghz is a bug in the system. There's a fix @ Sony to patch the error. I saw this info in the FW thread. I was excited till I saw what it actually was.

Upgraded it to 1.5Gb and frankly it runs pretty well. It actually ran OK with 1Gb. I'll deploy the first one to my dad cause he can't wait any more. The second VAIO is going to my lovely gf. That one will also get 1.5Gb for now as I'm pulling the 1Gb stick out of my Lenovo and donating it to her. I'm still on the lookout for a 2x2Gb sticks though.

I'm very pleased with these laptops! Runs great! Definitely a cut or two above the 400-450 bargain laptops.

The processor is 1.5 but the driver is installed for 1.8. Basically this happens if initially 1.8 processor was installed and later replaced by 1.5

To fix this, go to device manager and uninstall the driver for both the processors that show up in there and restart the system. On restart the correct driver will be installed.

It's replaced with a horizontal 2D interface for switching between windows. What did I mess up to lose the 3D? The window borders are still translucent.

Also I get a Vista score of 3.4 due to the integrated graphics card(x3100?). Does this laptop have a provision to take a dedicated graphics card? How about the processor? Will I be able to run a 1.8 or 2 Ghz C2D in the future with the existing cooling? For example, there's another FZ notebook with this spec

It's viable to replace the CPU in the future.

3.4 is quite decent (beats the 3.0 of nVidia 6150) and x3100 is supposedly getting better drivers "soon".

It will never be cost-efficient and possible for an average Joe to upgrade the graphics card in this thing. The HDMI port requires the 7000-series or higher nVidia card.

No, the max the screen can show is 1280x800. The resolution is based on the number of pixels in the screen, so its impossible for the screen to show 1680x1050. Hope that helps.

I'm running Vista with 1.5Gig of ram. It runs pretty good. The graphics is what makes Vista.

I could not get my recently purchased Logitech Orbit MP to run on this though. It says it can't find a webcam connected. But my Logitech Ultravision apparently works and it's decent.

Its a 6-cell battery, equivalent to the dell 6-cell 65Whr batteries. The model # is VGP-BPS8. It lasts me about 3 hours on "max performance" mode.

I just ordered one up. Seems like a pretty good Laptop especially after upgrading to 2GB. I'm also planning install XP and take off a lot of the extra softward etc. Should more than meet my needs of surfing the web, generating a few documents etc. OP Repped, especially for the update.

Well it took a bit of time and messing around but I managed to get everything working.
For the most part you can follow the procedures here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=138509
Read through all the posts and you can gather all the tricks to do.
Just go through control panel and write down the model of each hardware device.
The following is what mine had.

Bluetooth - Broadcom-Alps-BCM2046
video= Inte l965 express
DVD = Pioneer DVR-K17
Cam = VGP-Vcc8
touchpad = Alps pointing Device for sony
Modem Conexant HDaudio softmodem (install sound drivers 1st then this will be detected correctly)
Wireless = Intel Wifi 4965 AGN
NIC = Marvel Yukon 88E8036
Audio = SigmaTel HD Audio

I agree, vista runs fine on it and im happy with it. With a 2gb ram upgrade, the computer will run flawlessly.

pcs-5300 is fine. The chipset will not utilize the 6400 speed. Try 2Gb or more.

Two possibilities....Either RAM is defective or You have not inserted the RAM all the way in. You can test your RAM using this free program called Memtest http://www.memtest86.com/

You can try the www.sonystyle.com and see if they have vista 64bit drivers in the product support section. Other than that, the only other option that I can think of is to google for drivers or hope that vista automatically installs the drivers for you.

Go to Tools-Internet Options-General-Home Page. Then delete sony.com, adobe.com, and vaio.net. This is also where you can add your own home page tab.
