HP Jornada 728 Palmtop Handheld PC $99.90 shipped
Linky to buy on mwave.com [mwave.com]

I know, not anything super new and hot, but there is a strong palmtop / handheld PC following out there. This popped up in my email last night, and I had just ordered one from Computer Geeks for $25 more. Best online price I could find right now otherwise is $125 + shipping from geeks.com.

The wife wanted something to write poetry / stories / novels with on the road that was compact and had a full keyboard, and to me this is the best solution without having to lug a full laptop around, plus it's still cheaper and smaller than an Eee or any of its competitors.

    --- edit ---

Recent review (2008) of the refurb / recert Jornada 728 bought from geeks.com [rbmods.com], probably the same source that all the stores are pulling from right now. It's probably a better reference to what you're getting through the link than a review written back in 2002 or 2003 from when the 728 was first introduced.

Nice. Don't give it a thumbs down because you don't like the device- it's still the best deal around for it right now, and it's very useful for the people that are looking for something like it.

I think the price is still high for this puppy - specially being a refurb... and I can't believe I spent close to 5x the price for this 10 years ago... fro a bw uit from Philips (Nino it was called)

And also hard to believe that this does not have a phone built in

I owned a Philips Nino as well. That was a generation older than this unit and also did not have a keyboard like this one does. This guy has a much snappier CPU as well if I recall correctly.

The funny thing is, there's a guy here at work that still uses the Jornada 728 on a daily basis. I should tell him to pick up a spare for the next decade ahead. lol.

Yes. Any of this type of device that are still around are going to be refurbished. The Jornada 728 was HP's last hurrah in the handheld PC arena back in 2002, and I think the NEC Mobility 900 was the last good handheld a year after that. There's some device that came out in Japan recently that's bringing the handheld back, but it's not available in the US market (yet), and it's a heck of a lot more than $100.

Yup. I ordered the geeks.com one on 1/4, then got this email on 1/5 and cancelled the geeks order at lunch today while ordering the mwave.com unit. Same exact product, better price, still a dependable company. My last invoice from mwave.com was from 1999. Imagine that- and it's still logged in my account.

I don't think you're going to find any device on the market at all for this price point that's going to include a screen, multi-function OS (albeit old) and a full keyboard. This is what my wife wanted:

    AlphaSmart Neo manufacturer page [alphasmart.com]

... and I thought it was WAY too much money for a giant plastic keyboard larger than my laptop with a wider crappy Palm V style screen and OS.

Wow that's an old one. TBH unless you need the media capabilities it'll work pretty well... except you can't sync contacts, etc with it on Vista.

I wont lie, I use my Jornada 720 probably 2 or 3 times a week. I can type all my stuff out, sort through lab data and etc. . . then just pop out the CF card and everything is peachy. Best thing is I get about 8 hours if I'm using my regular battery and 20 hours on the bigger one. They are rated for 9 and 24 hours respectively. The keyboard takes a while getting used to but is pretty comfortable. If you need no frills typing or minor Microsoft program usage, this buddy's the man. AFIK, you might be able to use it with vista, it uses activesync on the device, so you should be able to get it through that or some third party solution.

If you need help with one, PM me.
